Barmouth Lifeboat Station

There has been a lifeboat stationed at Barmouth in Gwynedd since 1828, making it one of the RNLI’s oldest stations. In the early days there was a lot of commercial traffic in Cardigan Bay and there was a need for a boat to assist the sailing vessels calling at Barmouth and Portmadoc. Today’s boats are a 12m Mersey Class all weather boat, the Moira Barrie, capable of 16kts and a three-man fast inflatable D class boat, the Clive Tanner. Today’s casualties are largely pleasure boats and swimmers in need of assistance.

The boathouse, on the promenade, is open most weekdays for visitors to see the boats and during the summer the shop and small museum are open every day. With the exception of a full time mechanic, both the boathouse and shop are operated entirely by a team of over sixty volunteers covering roles such as shore crew to assist launching and recovery of the boats, shop management, fund raising, conducting guided school trips round the station and, of course, crewing the boats. Over the years 13 awards for gallantry have been received by this RNLI Station for their bravery and dedication. Their combined effort not only save lives, but also raise enough money to cover the entire running costs of the station most years.
